2024 Instagram Trend Talk report unveiled on 2023-12-04

Instagram unveiled the 2024 Instagram Trend Talk on 2023-12-04. The report focuses on Gen Z’s take on trends that will drive global culture in the year ahead.

2023 has been a year on socials to remember. From Barbie-core painting the world pink, to the rise of the ‘girl dinner’, viral moments and trends on Instagram and beyond have been driving global culture and influencing Gen Z’s next move.

Instagram’s Trend Talk, conducted in partnership with WGSN, shares the results of a sweeping survey looking at Gen Z trends across the US, UK, Brazil, India, and South Korea. The survey asked about topics, issues, and trends that matter to Gen Z and identified what you can expect to see all over the platform in 2024 - from fashion, beauty, social media, dating, friendships, and more.

2024 Instagram Trend Talk Topics

Key findings from the report include:

Fashion and Beauty

  • As they identify their ‘core’ aesthetics, Gen Z will be looking to fill their closets with clothing that they feel good in. People across surveyed countries agree that they want their clothing choices to express that they are comfortable.
  • Gen Z respondents noted that ‘A New Hairstyle’ was their favorite beauty tip they learned from social media, followed by skincare.

Matchstick making

Most of my travel by road throughout my life has mainly been for work. I know many in Indian Roadie and associated forums whose purpose of travel matches mine.
Spotting road/ vehicle signages, billboards screaming something that's unusual, people engaged in 'out of the box' businesses/ professions, out of the box happenings on every kilometre of road, etc, etc, etc possibly gives me a far bigger kick than getting a glimpse of a snow capped mountain peak or the ocean or the jungles or deserts.
More than three decades ago while I was with Castrol India, I used to visit the sprawling highly mechanized manufacturing unit of matchstick manufacturer WIMCO near Dakhineswar in North Kolkata. It used to be a thoroughbred blue chip MNC those days.
The drive on a dug up CR Avenue followed by the indefinite wait at Shyambazar and then a seemingly never ending narrow B.T.Road upto Dunlop Bridge and PWD Road upto Alambazar used to be a whole day's assignment.
The officials used to serve me wonderful food and beverages. They were so friendly. In one of my official trips to the factory, I happened to meet the head of HR who was there on a factory visit. Some chit-chat followed over coffee and he straight away offered me a lucrative job offer. However, I declined the offer after almost 2 months of negotiations because I wanted to be posted in Mumbai while the offer was for Kolkata.
The ugly head of communism had already crept in with inciting posters and banners screaming at everyone from every corners of the factory. Within the next few years the heavily overstaffed company closed down thanks to Jyoti Basu's militancy policies and Indira Gandhi's policies of reservation of matchstick manufacturing for the SME sector.
Those tiring drives in mid/ late 1980s made me an even more confident roadie on the bumpy roads of Kolkata in yesteryears.
The attached video of matchstick manufacturing in some small unit somewhere in India is far more relevant for me than any photos, reels and videos depicting a setting sun along a riverfront.

Facebook's policy of allowing memberd to join groups automatically is not acceptable

Facebook wants people to join 'public groups' automatically without approval by admins/ moderators. There's nothing that admins/ moderators can do to stop that. If the group setting is changed to 'private',  the same can't be changed to public ever again.

And why so? Ostensibly it's to ease the work pressure of admins/ moderators of having to approve any new joinee individually. By allowing people to join public groups automatically, Facebook supposedly is facilitating increase of engagement in public groups.
It's an utterly fake narrative by Facebook app, Facebook Community, Facebook Security.

It's evident that Facebook in India (I am not interested in what it does overseas) supports and encourages spammers, wrongdoers and disruptors on its social media platform. I strongly detest and oppose such one sided decisions by Facebook.

If we admins/ moderators are not vigilant enough by choosing the right Facebook settings, anyone can also post/ comment/reply automatically without even joining any public groups.

Cyberlaws in India rightfully hold admins/ moderators of groups/ forums responsible for any mischievous activity or wrongdoings in the group.
Admins/ moderators will now have to be on tenterhooks to continuously weed out unwanted disruptors and people with heinous intentions out of the groups they are responsible for.

I am publicly announcing my extreme displeasure on Facebook unanimously implementing these dangerous changes.
I as the admin/ moderator of quite a few groups/ forums should not be held responsible for any potentially harmful/ anti national activities happening in my groups/ forums because of such changes being introduced by Facebook.

Requesting Narendra Modi ji, PMO India, Amit Shah, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India to immediately intervene.

Requesting every Facebook user and Facebook group admin/ moderator who feels threatened by the unilateral moves by Facebook as a corporate entity to share my concern and tag all relevant law enforcing authorities across India.

Red Bull thinks about making advt content that its audience wants to see. It removes as much branding as possible

When it comes to producing video, most people think about what they want to see themselves and how to get their company message across at all costs.
Red Bull does the opposite. It thinks about making content that its audience will want to see and figures out how to remove as much branding as possible.
Rather than heavy-handed product placement, Red Bull continues to go for high-end content, richly filmed and exciting to watch, with an aesthetics that fits the brand attributes.
Red Bull invented the category and is rewriting the playbook on extreme, branded content. Cheers!!

If you want loyal customers [via social], you have to be proactive

One of the most important elements of building customer loyalty via social channels is to provide prompt responses to customer service inquiries, along with content and promotions. If you want loyal customers [via social], you have to be proactive.
Incompetent presence on social networks is a no-no.

Organisations must involve marketing and service if they want to leverage social to build loyalty.

It's important that answers are provided by an actual human being. If a consumer detects that its' an automated response, it could make the situation far worse.

Microtarget your marketing to yield less leads but better conversion

Spending money on an event that attracts 5,000 people is great - if those 5,000 people will ever buy from you. It's better to microtarget your marketing whenever possible to yield less leads but better conversion. Focus on quality vis-a-vis quantity.

You never know where your next customer may come from. Regardless of your target audience, let data be your guide.

Buying, selling, being sold

Buying is a pleasurable process where you happily exchange money for something you want or need.

Selling, on the other hand, is an uphill process of trying to convince someone that they want or need what you have. It's all about overcoming objections, coercion, manipulation.

Likewise, being sold is not enjoyable to a customer. That's why people have built-in sales resistance, that's automatically and unconsciously triggered at any attempt at selling them.

Bhagwat Prasad Pandey, MP Police Officer (Episode 04) earns respect from a fruits cum vegetable seller by the roadside in Sidhi

Indian Roadie police officer Bhagwat Prasad Pandey is always Happy To Help (Episode - 4):

Bhagwat Prasad Pandey knows how to earn respect while carrying out his official duty as a police officer in Sidhi, MP.
He is seen on the road in his official Mahindra Bolero from early in the morning till late in the evening enforcing lockdown guidelines, arranging quarantine facilities for migrant workers reaching the district town of Sidhi and surrounding villages, and providing masks/ foodstuff/ relief materials to whoever is in need of those.
Watch how wonderfully he builds up  rapport with a fruits cum vegetable seller by the roadside and earns his respect.
His favorite quote to reprimand people out on the road without concrete reasons is "#RajaKiNaatiHo" 😂

Bhagwat Prasad Pandey, MP Police Officer (Episode 03) is always Happy To Help

Humour and display of humanity while policing on the road in Sidhi, a small semi-rural town near Singrauli in Madhya Pradesh has fetched Bhagwat Prasad Pandey the much needed results plus a lot of personal branding and reputation management ever since April 2020.

He is seen patrolling the roads of Sidhi    and the surrounding villages driving his official Mahindra Bolero from early morning to late evening (and at times stretching to the wee hours of the morning) without displaying any fatigue and/ or irritation. The officer performs on self motivation. He doesn't work on the hypocritic inspiration of his political bosses.

The daunting challenge before him is to:
- make the poor semi-educated and illiterate population aware of the dangers of highly contagious Coronavirus.
- keep the largely rural population confined to their homes without the use of brutal force that police forces across the nation are known for.
- make people aware of the need to wear masks or wrap up the face.
- make arrangements for free food and essential supplies for the needy during the nationwide lockdown w.e.f March 25, 2020.
- ensure healthcare and quarantine facilities for anyone who needs it.
- Etc, etc, etc.

Live videos of Bhagwat Prasad Pandey on Facebook and YouTube and his style of policing (read, management) has become extremely popular with the Hindi speaking populace in MP, UP, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Haryana, NCR and elsewhere in India.

People in the small town have been following his instructions out of love and respect. Residents of the town and adjoining villages have come forward to lend a helping hand to supplement his efforts.

Bhagwat Prasad Pandey is our Indian Roadie of the difficult times.

Bhagwat Prasad Pandey, MP Police Officer (Episode 02) is always Happy To Help

Bhagwat Prasad Pandey is a glowing example of how to use social media fruitfully for 'personal branding' and 'reputation management'.
Bhagwat Prasad Pandey, MP police officer has been spending long hours on the road in Madhya Pradesh ever since nationwide Lockdown 1.0 was announced in end March 2020.
He is regularly spotted diligently convincing educated people to stay at home, viz. those who flout Covid19 lockdown rules without valid reasons.
His style of functioning and communicating is purely no nonsense and thoroughly business like.
Little wonders that people respect him and in the process he has already built up a phenomenal brand equity for himself.

His ability to spontaneously say rhyming couplets is praiseworthy.
While fulfilling his responsibility, this able cop who is always seen on the road in his Mahindra Bolero, is surely giving us reasons to smile while urging people to stay at home.

The Best Price Stores

Walmart India owns and operates 27 Best Price Modern Wholesale stores offering nearly 5,000 items in a Cash & Carry wholesale format. The Best Price Stores offer best prices with unmatched convenience, choice, quality and hygiene. The company also has 3 Fulfillment Centres in the country - Mumbai, Lucknow and Hyderabad.

Walmart India opened its first Fulfillment Center (FC) in Mumbai in November 2017 to enable kiranas, resellers & other businesses in Mumbai and neighbouring areas to get access to a wide & exciting assortment of merchandise relevant to them without stepping out of their stores. The second FC was opened in 2018 in Lucknow and the third one is located in Hyderabad. The FCs have been curated keeping in mind the finer nuances of convenience of small resellers, kiranas & other businesses – choice, value and service that they expect – great quality and competitively priced merchandise, doorstep delivery and easy payment solutions. The FCs contribute to the State and local economies by creating over 1500 direct & indirect local jobs, developing SME suppliers, and enabling small businesses to succeed. This model is a definitive step towards building an impactful distribution eco-system.
In addition to Cash & Carry business in India, Walmart contributes to the Indian economy in many other ways, including through Global Sourcing Centre and the Technology Centre, Walmart Labs and the most recent investment in Flipkart.

A typical Best Price cash-and-carry store spans over 50,000 square feet offering more than 5,000 items across product categories such as:
  • Consumer Packaged Goods (Food & Non Food)
  • General Merchandise
  • Household Electronics
  • Appliances
  • Fresh (Fruits, Vegetables, Poultry, Mutton, Fish)
  • Dairy (Milk and Milk Products)
Many more other products are also available under one roof, at everyday low and transparent prices to business members, allowing retailers and business owners to lower their cost of operations and maximize their revenues. Over 90-95% of these products are sourced locally. This helps to keep costs to a minimum, adds to the growth of local economy and creates job opportunities. Enhanced job opportunities are also created locally as the store directly employs from the local community.

Our Brands

Best Price stores have a dedicated Private Label program to meet the unique needs of resellers ('Kirana stores'), offices and institutions, hotels, restaurants and caterers.
This program has been designed after in-depth and meticulous research on the demographic structure of our country and its unique needs, demands and aspirations of various business segments.
The Private Label program offerings strengthen the assortment of 'kiranas’ and small businesses to compete with modern retail. The price structure allows profitability to the members, which allows them to pass on the price savings to the end-customers, thereby helping them to save money and live better.
Private label products are sourced in compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements (conformance to ethical, social and environmental norms, quality, food safety, and packaging). A dedicated team ensures that all the products are rigorously tested for quality and adherence to the highest standards before they are sold at our stores. As products for Private Label are sourced from local suppliers and manufacturers in the SME category, it helps boost the local economy and strengthen the company’s supply chain.
Best Price offers two exclusive private brands:  Right Buy and Member's Mark. These brands are exclusively available at all 27 Best Price stores. The brand promise of the two brands is “High on Quality, big on Savings.”
Right Buy: This is an opening price point brand that offers quality products at low prices. The brand offers a promise of “Pay less, Save more” enabling members to enhance their profits. It offers products across food, grocery, cleaning aids and more. Some of the best selling products are bath towels, hand towels, glass cleaner, toilet cleaner, floor cleaners, cornflakes, variety of pulses, papad, spices, sugar, salt, Assam blend CTC tea leaves, cookies, mustard oil, pet bottles, toothbrush, paper ream, pen, pencil, files and match boxes.

Women are happier without a husband and kids

Are women happier without a husband and kids? A study says YES!

01/8 Women are happier without getting married or having kids

All those who think a woman should tie the knot before a certain age as marriage makes her life better, now even science has evidence to prove them wrong. A study has indicated that single women are happier than their married counterparts.

02/8 The study

A study done by the American Time Use Survey (ATUS) compared the pleasure and misery levels of married, unmarried, separated, widowed and divorced individuals.

03/8 The finding

Interestingly, this survey suggested that married people reported higher level of happiness only when they were asked this question in the presence of their partner. Interestingly, unmarried people reported lower levels of misery than married people.

04/8 What expert says

Paul Dolan, a professor of behavioural science at the London School of Economics and author of the book 'Happy Ever After' opines that men benefit from marriage and women are happier before tying the knot.

05/8 Men benefit from marriage

Dolan takes reference from this same study and explains that men ‘calm down’ after getting married, take fewer risks, earn a higher income and live longer.

06/8 What about women?

Coming to women, he indicates that marriage takes a toll on their health and they are healthiest and happiest if they do not get married or have children.

07/8 What another study suggests

Another study done by a marketing intelligence company Mintel interviewed single women and concluded 61 per cent of these were happy being single. Not just this, 75 per cent of the women were not even looking for a partner. Whoa!

08/8 What does this indicate?

The findings of these studies indicate that times are changing and marriage and kids are not the only two factors that can make a woman happy. It's a woman's prerogative to decide when, with whom and at what age she should tie the knot, and it’s equally fine if she plans to stay single her entire life. Like they say, to each his own.

Automotive Lubricants industry in India - Part 1

Lubricants mainly find usage in automotive, industrial and marine and energy applications.

India is world’s third largest lubricants market, next only to US and China, with a total consumption of approximately 2.6 billion litres in 2016. The industry in India is made up of over 30 established players, viz Public Sector Undertaking – Oil Marketing Companies (IOCL, BPCL, HPCL) as well as the other players in the private sector (Total-Elf, Shell, Gulf Oil, Mobil, Valvoline, Motul, etc) on tenterhooks.

Break-up of Lubricants consumption in India:
•1.2 billion litres would be automotive lubricants,
•770 million litres would be industrial oils,
•with the remaining being process oils.

The overall India lubricants market is expected to register a CAGR of 4.64%, during 2018-2023. The major factors driving the growth of the market is undeniably the increasing vehicular production.

Overall vehicle sales grew by ~7% during 2017, compared to the previous year. In 2017, commercial vehicle sales increased by 9% overall, while heavy commercial vehicle sales grew by 2%, medium / light commercial vehicle sales (MLCV) by 14% and tractor sales moved up by 15%. Passenger car sales (including utility vehicles) also increased by 9% and two-wheeler sales moved up by ~7%.

Developments in the Automotive sector in 2017-18 FY has been a healthy year for the Indian Automotive industry in spite of a volatile regulatory environment. Total industry volumes grew by around 11.3% over April-December 2017 on a year-on-year basis. The Passenger Vehicle segment went up by around 8.1% and the Commercial Vehicle segment by around 15.2%. The total two- wheeler market grew by 11.8% and its exports at a healthy 13%.

The lubricants market growth (other than industrial and marine & energy) was 3% for 2017 post a recovery in the second half of the year. Other longer term macro-trends in the industry remained largely unchanged.
With Indian households generating higher disposable incomes, there has been a significant boost in vehicle sales for personal mobility, both for two and four-wheelers. First time users of personal mobility vehicles, along with growth in usage of two-wheelers in small towns and the emergence of gearless scooters driven by increasing number of women riders, has also led to a growth in two-wheeler sales.

Mineral oils hold the largest share among all the automotive lubricants used in the country, synthetic and semi-synthetic lubricants are expected to grow at a rapid pace during the period 2018-23.

Problems and prospects in the Automotive Lubricants sector:

Problems: Imports and supply of base oil are primarily controlled by the PSU-OMCs. This has a direct bearing on the pricing of the end product, timely supply and distribution.
With focus on marketing and zero red tapeism, Castrol India has its distinct advantage.

Prospects: The market opportunity across the Automotive Lubricants segments in India:
• Heavy duty automotive diesel engine oils 420 million litres per year,
• 125 million litres per year for passenger cars,
• 235 million litres per year for motorcycle oils and
• 280 million litres per year for transmission & axle oils, across the vehicle segments.

Demand for Automotive Lubricants is driven by the usage of vehicles in the country, while the growth in the market in recent years has been due to the rapid expansion of vehicle population.

OPPORTUNITIES AND THREATS

(i) Opportunities
a. Personal mobility: With multiple opportunities in personal mobility, including the growth of first time users, increase in usage in smaller towns and rural areas, as well as a growing number of women riders, the Company is tapping these segments for growth.

b. Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) partnerships: The Company works with OEMs to build enduring partnerships, such as its recent tie-up with Maruti for their premium Nexa channel and Piaggio for two-wheelers. It also works with OEMs on product development with new technologies as well as addressing the environmental needs of lower emission and fuel efficiency.

c. Medium / light commercial vehicles (MLCV): While the MLCV segment was moderately impacted by the economic slowdown in the first half of 2017, it is poised for growth due to the last-mile connectivity offered, which enables the Company to continue to focus on this category.

d. Improving technology in trucks: With the advent of stricter emission norms resulting in newer technologies
for trucks, the CI4+ segment is the fastest growing segment in the commercial vehicle category, in which the Castrol India enjoys a strong position.

e. Distribution: The Company has a large distribution network in the retail market. Renewed focus on distribution and customer reach in different market segments will enable future growth.

(ii) Threats
a. Economic uncertainty: After relative stability of low crude prices in the first half of 2016, the Company has seen an upward trend of base oil costs from late 2016, which rose further in 2017. This is likely to continue throughout 2018, based on the current and future market environment estimates.

b. GST: With GST rollout in 2017, there was very low inventory and stocking, and hence, overall production.
The effect started diminishing gradually in the second half of 2017. Also, the Company has been one of the first among lubricant players to transition smoothly to GST and bill customers immediately, post its introduction.
While some uncertainty around GST implementation currently exists, and measures are being taken to iron out these issues, this uncertainty is likely to continue in 2018.

c. Competitive activity: Competition in the lubricants market is intense and most international players have identified India as a focus market. Competitive activity is likely to remain high in the foreseeable future. There is also a trend of some OEMs introducing lubricants under their own brand name, further impacting the competitive landscape.
